Millisecond charge-parity fluctuations and induced decoherence in a superconducting transmon qubit

چکیده
The tunnelling of quasiparticles across Josephson junctions in superconducting quantum circuits is an intrinsic decoherence mechanism for qubit degrees of freedom. Understanding the limits imposed by quasiparticle tunnelling on qubit relaxation and dephasing is of theoretical and experimental interest, particularly as improved understanding of extrinsic mechanisms has allowed crossing the 100 microsecond mark in transmon-type charge qubits. Here, by integrating recent developments in high-fidelity qubit readout and feedback control in circuit quantum electrodynamics, we transform a state-of-the-art transmon into its own real-time charge-parity detector. We directly measure the tunnelling of quasiparticles across the single junction and isolate the contribution of this tunnelling to qubit relaxation and dephasing, without reliance on theory. The millisecond timescales measured demonstrate that quasiparticle tunnelling does not presently bottleneck transmon qubit coherence, leaving room for yet another order of magnitude increase.

The Properties and Light-Matter Interaction of a Superconducting Majorana-Transmon Qubit
We analyse the transmon regime Hamiltonian of a Cooper-Pair-Box where the superconducting phase difference is coupled to the zero energy parity states that arise from Majorana quasi-particles. We investigate the level structure and properties of the transmon qubit in this regime where even a small coupling causes hybridization of different transmon-parity states without compromising the suppres...
متن کاملOptimized driving of superconducting artificial atoms for improved single-qubit gates
We employ simultaneous shaping of in-phase and out-of-phase resonant microwave drives to reduce singlequbit gate errors arising from the weak anharmonicity of transmon superconducting artificial atoms. To reduce the effect of higher levels present in the transmon spectrum, we apply Gaussian and derivative-of-Gaussian envelopes to the in-phase and out-of-phase quadratures, respectively, and opti...
متن کاملScalable Ion Trap Quantum Computing without Moving Ions
A hybrid quantum computing scheme is studied where the hybrid qubit is made of an ion trap qubit serving as the information storage and a solid-state charge qubit serving as the quantum processor, connected by a superconducting cavity. In this paper, we extend our previous work[1] and study the decoherence, coupling and scalability of the hybrid system. We present our calculations of the decohe...
متن کاملLife after charge noise: recent results with transmon qubits
We review the main theoretical and experimental results for the transmon, a superconducting charge qubit derived from the Cooper pair box. The increased ratio of the Josephson to charging energy results in an exponential suppression of the transmon’s sensitivity to 1/f charge noise. This has been observed experimentally and yields homogeneous broadening, negligible pure dephasing, and long cohe...
متن کاملCollective modes in the fluxonium qubit
Superconducting qubit designs vary in complexity from singleand few-junction systems, such as the transmon and flux qubits, to the many-junction fluxonium. Here, we consider the question of whether the many degrees of freedom in the fluxonium circuit can limit the qubit coherence time. Such a limitation is in principle possible, due to the interactions between the low-energy, highly anharmonic ...
